Portrait of Reverend Robert Dannals

For the past eight years, Reverend Robert Dannals has been the rector of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas.  He is now retiring and yesterday his ministry was celebrated by the congregation with gifts and goodbyes.  The church commissioned me to paint his portrait and it was unveiled after the morning service.

It was Reverend Dannals who had the vision to open up a dark corner in the church by removing a long brick wall and adding stained glass windows and doors.  In his portrait he is opening one of these doors (designed by my mentor and much admired artist friend Bart Forbes) to the courtyard beyond - inviting his parishioners to go out in ministry to the world outside.
