Portrait of Jack Peltason

I've been working on a series of portraits of former Chancellors for the University of California at Irvine.  The most recent subject is Jack Peltason, who served from 1984 to 1992.  He was a constitutional scholar and a renowned leader in higher education -- with a modest manner and a homespun sense of humor.

  1. Even without your verbal description of Peltason's sense of humor, you've made it shine in his eyes and mouth. Also, a belated comment about the previous painting, Heritage -- the design and execution put this among my favorites of yours. I love how the father's presence is evoked through a cast shadow, how those shadows have a faint orange edge, and how the curves (the boy and shadows) resonate with the strict geometry of the building. Yet all those technical elements are secondary to the narrative and feeling in the boy's face and posture. Masterful.
