Finding Inspiration

Today started out as one of those uninspired days when I wasn't pleased with the progress I was making with my painting.  (My wife tells me "wasn't pleased" is a gross understatement.)  After lunch I Googled some inspiration ~ the ballet paintings of Edgar Degas ~ which gave me the idea to add more figures to this canvas.  Something about these figures at rest in the background, in contrast with the dancer practicing in the foreground, feels right to me.  Once again I'm excited about this painting and eager to continue working on it.

  1. Speaking of inspiration... thank you for sharing your good and the "wasn't pleased" with us! It reminds me that you are human like the rest of us and not this perfected painting machine. :-)

The article and acknowledgement from the portrait society is so cool! Congrats!

  2. Edgar would be envious. Really. The additional line of dancers adds to the story narrative. Wonderful asymmetrical balance with the use of her hand and foot, contrasted by the offset background dancers. This one might make waves in the art community. Thank you for sharing.

  3. James, this painting is gorgeous!! The cool tones of the skin makes it look like they are dancing in moonlight - will we get to see this one soon, I hope??
